The monastery is located within the diocese of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, and is home to about 100 monks of the Kenonian or communal monastic order.

 

The stone castle on Mount Qusqam was built in the 6th or 7th century in the Monastery of Muharraq. The church of the castle contains a pulpit dating back to the 12th century, dating back to the time of the first restoration of the castle.

 

The monastery library consists of two entities, the Library of Ancient Coptic Manuscripts and Archives, and the Library of Contemporary Research and Reading.
